U3A NEW PLYMOUTH
U3A (University of the Third Age) had its beginnings in France in the mid seventies and has now spread to many countries including Australia and New Zealand.
U3A is a response to the idea that human life is divided into three periods: firstly, childhood and schooling; secondly, Child-rearing and work; thirdly, retirement or semi-retirement.
U3A encourages an active retirement for women and men by widening their interests and getting involved with their cultural, social, physical and intellectual interests, and sharing their activities in an informal friendly atmosphere.
It is "University" in the original sense of the word; a group of people learning for its own sake, or following a particular activity.
